Board Development Process
(Overview)
Our approach to organizational board development for schools utilizes the Policy Governance Model created and identified by John Carver. This model is a radical departure from the normal operations of boards as we have known them for years. In many instances, current structures and operations of school boards create entities that merely respond to agendas that have been set by administration to receive board approval for operational issues. This structure lends itself to board micromanagement as boards find themselves increasingly responding to management level decision-making. The Policy Governance Model focuses the board on their responsibilities as a governing body to set policy and their obligation to develop as a cohesive unit to ensure appropriate and effective visioning and mission-building for the organization.
